Non Objective Musical Interpretation

These works represent my Sculpture I class from my time teaching at Louisiana State University. The students were asked to choose a song to illustrate through a non-objective plaster carving. These works represent the student selections from classical to techno, Beyonce to Fela Kuti, while they explored space and form through subtraction.

Natural Systems Planar Wood Sculptures

My Sculpture I students learned introductory wood working techniques through a planar sculpture project. Students were asked to visually represent at least two different natural systems using repeated planar units. Students explored repetition, pattern and Gestalt theories as they assembled parts to create a whole. Students completed the work with a finish that brought out the natural beauty of the wood.

Plaster Cast Poetry Sculptures

The final project of my introductory sculpture course taught students the fundamentals of casting and mold-making. Students constructed a sculpture out of clay illustrating a poem or passage of their choosing. They were then led through the process of creating a two- part flexible silicone mold. After the mold was completed, students removed the original clay pattern to cast the final product in plaster.

Chiaroscuro Portraits

My teaching as a K-8 Talented Art Teacher emphasizes observational drawing skills. For this lesson my students learned to render a volume in portraiture by using a single light source. Students were prompted to “draw the light” using white charcoal on black drawing paper. We connected this lesson to the works by Italian Baroque artist Caravaggio and analyzed the use of chiaroscuro in his images to convey a dramatic atmosphere.
